Candace, what do you do for a living?
I am a contemporary art adviser based in NYC.
How did you find out about Jelena Behrend?
I used to walk my German Shepherd, Luke, in front of her old Orchard Street studio when I lived in
the East Village. I would ogle the offerings in the window and eventually Jelena came out and said hi
to Luke and I. Luke was my show-stopper!
What are your favorite places to wear Jelena’s jewelry?
Everywhere.
Unless I am sleeping or showering, I always have on multiple pieces of Jelena Behrend.
What pieces are your all time favorite, and why?
Probably my Bubble Ring, now known as the Candace Ring. I wanted a statement ring in gold
with stones and basically told Jelena to make what she wanted based on this. It’s so special that
on the rare occasion I don’t wear it, people ask me where it is. It is truly an unforgettable ring.
Do they bring you fortune, love, and protection?
I am not a big believer in that sort of thing but all of her work definitely has a special power to it.
My gold nugget charm necklace is the go-to good luck piece!
How does Jelena make the jewelry perfect for you?
Jelena has a weird sixth sense about what styles work with different clients and collectors. I have seen her do it
over and over again with astonishing accuracy. When I am waffling about what direction to go in, she knows exactly
what type of metal, stone, length, etc. works. Because of this, all of my pieces I go back to again and again.
What do people say, when they see you wearing the jewelry, and how do you manage their envy?
I get so many compliments from so many different kinds of people. I was in London a few weeks ago at a dinner
and the artist I was sitting with was obsessed with my earrings. They were a relatively new design by Jelena. It was an open,
elongated, bird-cage shape. The artist sitting next to me just kept staring at them. I finally just took one off and let her put it on.
We were pretty lit by then. Thankfully I remembered to get it back at the end of the night.
What is your favorite place to wear Jelena’s jewelry? Are there pieces that you never take off, that are a part of your skin?
I don’t wear the flashier pieces when I am upstate in the country. Outside of that, I am always wearing Jelena’s earrings
and multiple rings at a minimum, plus a bracelet or 2 stacked up with my watch…
What pieces are you hoping to own next?
A new charm for one of my necklaces and maybe some stackable pinky rings in different
finishes with colored diamonds.
